How do I set up my first goal?
When you first open the app, you'll be guided through a 5-step SMART goal setup:
- Specific - What exactly do you want to achieve?
- Measurable - How will you track it?
- Achievable - Is it realistic for you right now?
- Relevant - Why does this matter to you?
- Time-bound - When will you achieve it by?
The app will auto-generate a goal statement you can customize. You'll also add at least 5 reasons why this goal matters to you.
Why do I need at least 5 reasons?
Research shows that having multiple, varied reasons increases success rates. The app shows you a random reason each time you have a moment of weakness, so variety keeps the intervention fresh and prevents habituation. More reasons = more emotional anchors to draw from in critical moments.
How do I use the app when I'm tempted?
There are multiple ways to trigger the intervention:
- Open the app and tap "I'm having a Moment of Weakness"
- Use a widget on your home screen or lock screen
- Ask Siri: "Hey Siri, I'm having a moment of weakness"
- Apple Watch: Tap the complication or open the watch app
- App Shortcuts: Long-press the app icon
You'll immediately see one of your reasons, then go through a research-backed 90-second intervention protocol.
What is the 90-second intervention protocol?
After you view your reason, the app guides you through a research-backed 90-second intervention based on clinical psychology techniques from CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy):
- Urge Surfing (60 seconds): Focus on the physical sensation of craving as it peaks and subsides—like a wave you observe without acting on
- Cognitive Reappraisal (30 seconds): Engage your rational "cool" brain system by reflecting: "If I give in now, how will I feel in an hour? Tomorrow?"
- Immediate Check-In (90 seconds): Report your outcome while the moment is fresh—before rationalization sets in
You can respond:
- ✅ Success - You resisted temptation (adds to your streak!)
- ❌ Failure - You gave in (honest tracking helps identify patterns)
- 🔄 Need Another Reason - Show me a different motivation
This timing is based on neuroscience research showing impulses naturally peak and decline within 60-90 seconds. Learn more about the science →
How does location tracking work?
If you grant location permission, the app automatically records where each moment occurs (optional but recommended). Key features:
- Privacy-first: No specific addresses are stored, only approximate coordinates
- Auto-categorization: Learns your home, work, gym, etc. from patterns
- Strength vs Challenge Zones: See where you succeed vs. struggle
- Optional alerts: Get notified when entering a trouble spot
All data stays on your device and private iCloud—never shared.
Can I add photos to my reasons?
Yes! Visual memory is 60,000x faster than text. Adding photos makes your reasons more powerful:
- Photo of loved ones you're staying healthy for
- Image of your goal body or achievement
- Picture of consequences you want to avoid
- Screenshots of motivational moments
To add a photo: Go to Reasons tab → tap a reason → "Add Photo"
How do I see my progress and patterns?
The Insights tab shows comprehensive analytics:
- Success rate over time (daily, weekly, monthly)
- Activity by hour - When are you weakest? (3am, 9pm, etc.)
- Day of week patterns - Which days are hardest?
- Location heat map - Where you struggle vs. succeed
- Streak counter - Current and longest streaks
I'm not receiving check-in notifications
Check these settings:
- Go to iPhone Settings → Moment of Weakness → Notifications
- Ensure "Allow Notifications" is ON
- Enable "Time Sensitive Notifications" (iOS 15+)
- Check that Focus mode isn't blocking the app
- Make sure notification style is set to "Banners" or "Alerts"
Location tracking isn't working
Ensure location permissions are granted:
- Go to iPhone Settings → Moment of Weakness → Location
- Select "While Using the App" or "Always" for geofencing alerts
- Enable "Precise Location" for better accuracy
If you initially denied permission, you'll need to manually enable it in Settings.
Widgets aren't showing up
To add widgets:
- Long-press your home screen or lock screen
- Tap the "+" in the top corner
- Search for "Moment of Weakness"
- Choose widget size and tap "Add Widget"
Available widgets: Small (streak), Medium (reasons), Lock Screen (circular/rectangular/inline)
Siri shortcuts aren't working
Try saying:
- "Hey Siri, I'm having a moment of weakness"
- "Hey Siri, log a moment in Moment of Weakness"
- "Hey Siri, check my streak in Moment of Weakness"
If not working, go to Settings → Siri & Search → Moment of Weakness and ensure "Use with Siri" is enabled.
Apple Watch app isn't syncing
Troubleshooting steps:
- Ensure both iPhone and Watch are on latest OS versions
- Confirm iCloud sync is enabled on iPhone (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud)
- Check that the Watch app is installed (it auto-installs with the iPhone app)
- Open the iPhone app to trigger a sync
- Restart both devices if issues persist
How do I change or edit my goal?
Go to Settings tab → Edit Goal. You can:
- Update the goal headline/statement
- Modify SMART components
- Change target date
Note: You can only have one active goal at a time. To start a completely new goal, you'll need to archive the current one.
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored in two places:
- Locally on your device - Always available offline
- Your private iCloud - Automatically syncs across your devices
We never have access to your data. No servers. No third parties. No tracking.
Can I export my data?
Yes! Go to Settings → Export Data. You'll get a complete JSON file including:
- All goals and reasons
- Complete moment history
- Photos (embedded in the export)
- Analytics data
You can also import this backup later to restore everything.
How do I delete all my data?
To permanently delete all data:
- Go to Settings → Clear All Data
- Confirm deletion (this cannot be undone)
- Optionally: Delete from iCloud by turning off iCloud sync in Settings
Uninstalling the app does NOT delete iCloud data—you must manually remove it.
How much does Moment of Weakness cost?
Moment of Weakness costs $2.99 as a one-time purchase. We also offer optional "Skin in the Game" subscriptions designed to increase commitment through financial stakes:
- Starter ($1.99/month) - Light financial commitment to boost accountability
- Committed ($4.99/month) - Moderate stake to reinforce your goals
- Serious ($9.99/month) - Maximum commitment for serious change
Why "Skin in the Game"? Behavioral research shows that financial commitment dramatically increases follow-through. When you've invested money, you're more likely to use the app consistently and achieve your goals. This isn't about revenue—it's about leveraging loss aversion psychology to help you succeed.
Note: The subscriptions provide the same features as the base app. The value is purely psychological commitment.
Do I need an account to use the app?
No! The app works entirely without registration or login. Just download and start using it. Your data syncs via your iCloud account if enabled.
